Aftercare instructions
Tongue

Directly after your piercing is done you should leave it alone for a few hours. This is because it is a fresh wound and therefore will bleed if not allowed to settle down.

You do not need to clean your piercing. The best way to care for it is to drink lots of water. Every time you eat, smoke, or drink anything but water you should rinse your mouth with water. Once a day you can rinse your mouth with a mild sea salt solution (a couple of pinches in a cup of boiled and coiled water) if you wish. The day after the piercing your tongue is likely to be swollen and sore when you wake up.

The piercer will have taken this into account – this is why the jewellery may have seemed too big when the piercing was done. The best way to combat this is to drink lots of water, as your tongue becomes dehydrated whilst it is healing.

The area around the piercing will be sore and tender for a few days so be careful not to catch the jewellery when cleaning your teeth and eating. The rougher you are with the piercing the longer it will take to heal. You should not avoid cleaning your teeth as this may cause an infection as well as bad breath while the piercing is healing you should be careful when eating. The best thing to do is only eat things that are soft and do not need lots of chewing.

Once the swelling has gone down and your tongue is back to normal you should come back and we will change the bar to a shorter one at no extra cost. This will normally be around seven to ten days later.

If you wish to change the jewellery then please remember that cheap jewellery will not do your piercing any good, always choose titanium jewellery from a reputable source to give your piercing the best chance to heal. If you are nervous or unsure about changing the jewellery for the first time we will be happy to do it for you at no cost, and can show you the best way to go about it in future.

Infections develop easily in piercings, especially when they are not cleaned correctly and when people play with their piercing or touch it with dirty fingers. The signs to watch out for are:

The area becomes red or inflamed.
Yellow or greenish discharge from the piercing
Increased soreness around the piercing

If you notice any of the above you should contact your piercer for advise. Do not remove the jewellery as the infection may become trapped under the skin, and in most cases an infection can be successfully treated and the piercing healed, although this may take longer than usual.

We offer unlimited aftercare for you and your piercing so if you have any questions or concerns do not hesitate to come and see us.
