The after-care of
your piercing is of the utmost importance. But everyone is
different so the way you look after it will be different from
the next person. Everyone will have different advice for you.
What they did, how they did it & when they did it. Listen,
and then do what is right for you, because it is your piecrcing.
Only you know what is right for you. Here are some basic after-care
instructions for you to read based on Smart Holes 15 years
experience.
Leave your piercing alone for a couple of hours
after it has been done. Then you can start your after-care
program. For the first dew days your piercing will be tender
so be gentle. The rougher you are the longer it will take
to heal. You must keep cleaning it for as long as it takes
to be 100% healed and then periodically afterwards. Clean
your piecring 2 - 3 times a day, or when needed.
Infections can develop easily on a new piercing since it
is an open wound. Do not touch your piercing unless you are
cleaning it. If the piercing is on your torso, try to wear
losse fitting clothing around the area. Don’t spend
hours cleaning it; ( 4-5 mins, 2-3 times a day on average
is fine). During healing it will excrete fluid that will dry
and become stuck to the jewellery and this must be cleaned
thoroughly.
Your piercing musts be allowed to breath. If you have to
cover it, try to use a low adherent dressing such as melolin
pads. Also try to use only liquid cleansing solutions*.
creams and oils can black the poors of the skin. But whatever
you use make sure it is mild. Warm, mild salty water is ok.
so is sea-salt, anti-bacterial cleansing lotions, saline and
woundwash.
*AVOID surgical spirits, anti-septic creams, TCP, dettol,
and tea tree oil etc.
For oral piercings rinse out with salt-water or mild anti-septic
mouthwash. Rinse after every time you eat or drink something.
You ust get rid of any food particles from your mouth.
Do not avoid baths but avoid swimming pools. Taking a bath
is ok so long as you dont soak in dirty water or use perfumed
bubble bath. Showers are ok too, buth the chlorine in swimming
pools is not recommended for ahealing wound.
For genital piercings cotton underwear should be worm at
all times while it is healing. You might find panty liners
handy for the firs few hours after having a genital piercing.
Remember ‘common sense’ when having any type of
sexual contact (that includes oral piercings)
If any piercings becomes angry or red looking, dont panic.
It could just be that the cleaning solution is too strong.
